Oh , remember that?...An army of lovers shall not fail...now if we could just find some lovers:-) Anyway the darned seeds are in my living room....enough seeds to feed everybody in the four counties that come together here in Melrose Florida..
Heirloom seeds for vegetables, flowers and some herbs..An heirloom seed is usually open-pollinated and after the harvest you can save seeds and plant more next year. This is a very important thing..Most of the seeds you get in the hardware store and the big boxes are produced by huge corporations who do not want you to save seeds and grow more plants next year...why? well, they want you to buy more and not just that, they want to have control over our food sources..a very bad thing.. you have heard of genetic engineering and other equally wicked things? I won;t go into it now...later I will.
I bought a kadzillion seeds from FedCo Co-op, a co-operative company who has been around for a long time, probably old hippies who care about the survival not only of the planet but of you and me, meaning human beings. Their seeds come from independent growers, all over the country who specialize in growing crops just for this reason....to produce open-pollinated seeds for distribution to people like you and me...people who care about the continued survival of a diverse array of plants.
Here are some of the seeds that you can purchase starting tomorrow..or come on over tonight and bang on my door..I won't mind because I am just sitting here with Molly staring at a dream come true:-)
Prescott Fond Blanc Melon
Cracoviensis Lettuce
Benning's Green Tint Squash
Long Pie Pumpkin
Lincoln Pea
Red Russian Kale
Czech Black Pepper
Hopi red Dye Amaranth
Torch Mexican Sunflower
lots more varieties...this is just a quick tantalizing list...ever hear of these? Bet not..... because the grocery store only carries one or two kinds of lettuce...cantalopes are just cantalopes....one kind...bore, bore, bore....they think we are a glum lot, wanting just one kind of green bean, when in fact there are so many i could have a green bean seed store:-)
there are a kadzillion seeds.....like I said, enough to feed half of the world...:-) They will sell for $2 a packet...and they are a nice size packet too...If you would like to try something new, you could even share with a friend, because most include enough seeds for lots of what is inside. I know it is late in the season for us, but remember we have a long growing season and also a Fall season...some of the cooler weather vegetables can easily be grown in the Fall....picking your own sweet lettuce for Thanksgiving dinner is one of the joys of living in Florida.
Music tomorrow....and we hope Hanna has another chapter of her delightful novel ready to share with us. Good night. Remember I have organic plant food (commonly called fertilizer) and also something I have used for twenty years SuperThrive...a plant food booster...we green thumbs have our tricks:-)
Come in Wednesday for music and a good fun time..Take Me Magical Places 2008. Everyone is welcome to come, bring instruments poetry and short stories to share with everyone. Just think of this small place like a living room for the community. We might not be perfect and isn't that the point.
